Southern Tasmania

Around Hobart in Tasmania's south-east is the most densely populated region of the state. Although you will still see lots of bushland areas and natural wonders. Hobart is the State Capital and largest City in Tasmania. It is situated in the south-east of the State and is the hub for commerce and industry.

Hobart's history and buildings and its geographical location make it a good starting point to explore the state. Locations are scattered throughout the Hobart Suburbs. The Shot Tower at Taroona and Arthurs Circus at Battery Point are just 2 examples.

Mt. Wellington, Hobart's highest peak, is a very short drive from the city centre, and gives a spectacular view of the entire area. Within range for day tours are the Historic Town of Richmond, Hastings Caves, and the Mt. Field National Park.

The Hobart International Airport is east of the city via Richmond, and has direct flights to most mainland Australian cities. There is a shuttle bus service between the city and the airport. For those without cars, buses are also the means to get to other areas of Tasmania.

As Hobart is Tasmania's state capital, the main offices of many government departments are located in Hobart, making the state government a large employer. The Hobart area also has alarge manufacturing base, with large incomes being created by shipbuilding (In-Cat) and a zinc refinery.

There are many Tours, Attractions and Recreational pursuits in the area.


The City of Clarence
Clarence is a mix of all the great things Tasmania has to offer. Clarence is a great place to live, work and visit, with a clean environment and friendly community.

The City of Clarence, with a population of 50,000 people, is located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, across the Tasman Bridge from Hobart.

When asked what makes Clarence a preferred place to live, the most common response is "lifestyle".

Clarence provides many choices when it comes to selecting a place to live. Water and mountain views are the rule rather than the exception - with harbourside, beachside, rural, city or village options available lifestyle choices abound.

Derwent Valley
The Derwent Valley Municipal area is characterised by its ever growing rural townships, green hills and river valley environment.

The municipal area covers 4,111 sq kms in South Central Tasmania. This peaceful, rural setting provides a gateway to some of Tasmania's most spectacular wilderness areas, including Mt Field National Park and the Western Tasmanian World Heritage Area.

Major features of the Derwent Valley municipality include it's land and fresh water resources. The region has lakes and river water supplies and productive soils.


Huon Valley
The Huon Valley area covers 5497sq. kms. and is the southern most local government area in Australia. Despite its proximity to Hobart, a 40 minute drive away, the area retains the beauty, charm and heritage of a bygone era.

The natural beauty of the area is evident with pristine rivers meandering through valleys bordered by world heritage listed National Parks. Bush walkers are able to enjoy numerous walks ranging from a tree top walk at Tahune Airwalk or a five hour trek to South Cape, Australia's Southernmost point.


The City of Glenorchy
The City of Glenorchy lies on the west bank of the Derwent River, north of Hobart. It extends from New Town Rivulet in the south to the Black Snake Rivulet in the north, and consists mainly of undulating plains, rising steeply in the west to a line of hills.

The dominant physical features of Glenorchy are the Derwent River and the Wellington Range in the background.

Economic growth has always been a hallmark of Glenorchy. In the early days the district had strong agricultural and horticultural bases and the beginnings of an emerging industrial sector.


The City of Hobart
