Smithton is amongst the largest and oldest established towns on Tasmania's far north-west coast. Smithton is a part of the Greater area known as the Circular Head region. Smithton is the base for the area's dairy farming and vegetable growing activities. The processing of these products is an important part of the local economy. Other industries around which Smithton is based include forestry and fishing.

Smithton is also known for its Blackwood Forests. Other Forestry reserves form part of the areas economy. There are many recreational opportunities on offer, including bushwalking and many playground areas. For the extremely adventurous travel to Marrawah and surf off the Coast of the Indian Ocean. There are also ample fishing and boating opportunities in the area.

Smithton, to many, is a gateway to the West Coast's Arthur River area. With stunning Flora & Wildlife areas only a short drive away.

Smithton is about 45 - 50 Minutes drive from Wynyard.

Lacrum Dairy Farm is open for public viewing on summer & autumn afternoons which has regular milking demonstrations, cheese tastings and sales. Allendale Gardens are also in the area, a privately owned botanical gardens with rainforest walk. Also look out for the Largest Hardwood Mill in Australia, Gunns timber mills.

Smithon has 3.5 and 4 Star accomodation facilities. Included among these is Tall Timbers Resort.
