|
"...Ross is a popular stop along the Midlands Highway in Central Tasmania..."
|
Ross is an historic town situated off the Midlands Highway between Hobart and Launceston.
The biggest attraction in Ross is the Ross Bridge, one of the oldest and most spectacular in Australia. The bridge was built by convicts in the 1830's, and has more than 180 carvings which were said to be so good they won the convict stonemason, Daniel Herbert, a free pardon from his sentence.
many lakes in the Ross area are known to have excellent fishing spots.
Like other places around the midlands, the Ross area is known for its merino wool. The Tasmanian Wool Centre has various wool products for sale and a small museum.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service manage "The Female Factory" which was an old female convict prison. They have restored the Commandant's cottage. Inside the cottage, you can learn about life at the Female Factory.
