Queenstown - Tasmania
|
"...Queenstown is the largest town in Tasmania's West. Like most towns on the west coast it is best known for its mining industries..."
|
Queenstown is the largest town in western Tasmania. Mining has been the largest industry in Queenstown since the late 1800's when gold, silver and copper were discovered.
The tree's on the hills around Queenstown were removed to fuel copper smelters, and rain subsequently washed away the soil, leaving the purplish and gold rock exposed. The majestic undressed mountains are a strangely beautiful sight from the highway going into Queenstown. You will want to stop to take photographs.
Just east of Queenstown is the original open cut goldmine. To the west, you can walk along the disused mine railway to Zeehan.
More than 20,000 kg of gold has been mined at Mt. Lyell since the 1880's. Tours of the mine are available.
