Penguin - Tasmania
|
"...Penguin is a small township on Tasmania's North West Coast. Only 15 Minutes from Burnie and a couple of minutes from Ulverstone..."
|
The unique township of Penguin on Tasmanias North West Coast gained its name from the fairy penguin colonies which present along the coast in this area of Tasmania. There are night viewing sessions when the penguins clamber ashore to return to their nests after a day of feeding in the deeper waters of Bass Straight. The best time for viewing is during the summer breeding season, November until March.
The Dial Range backdrops Penguin, and there are numerous trails for bushwalking and horse riding. Ferndene Gorge and Mt. Montgomery State Reserves are 2 popular attractions.
In Penguin, St. Stephen's Church and Uniting Church are both classified by the National Trust. "Hiscutt Park" has a working Dutch windmill and tulips, plus a lake which is home to a platypus.
Mason's Fuschia Fantasy is just south of the town, where 750 varieties of fuschia are on display. Other attractions further from the town include Gunns Plains caves.
Penguin is a comfortable 15 min drive east of Burnie, and has 3½-star accommodation facilities which are RACT rated.
