King Island - Tasmania

"...King Island off Tasmania's North West Coast is best known for its Dairy Farming, in particular its World Class Cheeses..."
King Island is situated off the north-west tip of Tasmania, and reflects the diverse industry found in Tasmania as a whole. The north and east coasts, feature wonderful sandy beaches. The jagged cliffs to the south make it easy to see why this area has suffered more ship wrecks than anywhere else in Australia.

King Island is known accross Australia & around the World for its quality produce - cream, specialty cheeses, beef and rock lobster. Kelp is harvested from the shore and dried. The kelp is exported for use in products ranging from ice cream to cosmetics. Both the dairy and kelp factories are in the vicinity of King Island's largest town, Currie.

King Island is a diver's dream, with many shipwrecks in the area. Activities offered on King Island also include horse riding, bushwalking, and fishing. Surfing is also common on the many beaches on the island.

People wanting a more relaxed holiday should visit the Pegarah Forestry Plantation, in the middle of the island (between Currie and Grassy), which provides photo opportunities amongst large tree ferns and Tasmanian hardwoods. The Lavinia Nature Reserve has one of Tasmania's rarest bird species, the orange bellied parrot. A unique attraction is the calcified forest, where many years ago, forest was rapidly covered by sand dunes, which have since receded. A fairy penguin colony also calls the Grassy area home.

King Island was first settled around the year 1800 by sealers. The Lighthouse at Cape Wickham on the north of King Island is the largest one in Australia. It also marks the most northerly point of Tasmania.
