Campbell Town - Tasmania

"...Campbell Town is a Sheep Farming area. Its economy is also dependent on Tourism..."
Campbell Town is one of the major sheep farming centres in Tasmania's midlands. The Midlands Highway is the main route between Hobart and Launceston and passes through Campbell Town.

Campbell Town's Merino sheep were introduced over 150 years ago, but the historic Winton estate dates back further than that. The well-preserved buildings and attractive gardens are open for public tour, with highlights including the woolshed and original blacksmiths shop with bellows and forge.

The largest part of Campbell Town's attraction is its history. Numerous Campbell Town churches of various denominations are classified by the National Trust.

Other historic markers include the Campbell Town railway station, site of the first telephone call in the southern hemisphere, and the showgrounds, which are part of ongoing history - the Midland Show is the oldest continuous show in Australia.
