Bridport is Located approximately 90 km North East Launceston travelling along the the Tasman Highway. The attractive holiday town of Bridport is located on the south end of Anderson Bay. With a population of around 1000 and a highly travelled destination in summer, it is in an area sought after for its excellent sea and river fishing, swimming and beach facilities, and its holiday atmosphere.
Surveyor Thomas Lewis was the first European traveller through the area. He explored the district around 1830. The first settlers folowed by moving there in the mid 1830's. Andrew and Janet Anderson arrived in 1833. They gave their name to Anderson Bay. Peter Brewer arrived 1835 and built 'Bowood', a fine Georgian stone, brick and sawn timber dwelling, it built in 1838. Located 12 km north of the town, it is the oldest building in the district. Peter Brewer was an ex-convict carpenter and an American stonemason who had deserted from his sealing ship.
